The difference between a catalogue and the internet is agency -- what makes man man, the ability to fashion a tool and use it. Catalogues are passive. They come in the mail at an allotted time, and you look through the pages in the order in which they are stapled/bound, and you get what you get.

The internet allows you to actively look for what you want. To search. To move laterally among different "catalogues" all at the same moment.

There is a lot of similarity, but a significant psychological difference, and it's more than presentation. What is the difference between video stores and cable/t.v. movies? You have the choice/freedom to act upon your environment. In time, as people get more internet-savvy, that difference can be meaningful.

Again, morning thots...don't know why I'm so philosophical...I agree the business to business is huge, and appreciated the postings here this a.m.

I am a little surprised you are talking about picking out 2x4's ---- My own life would be significantly simplified if replacement parts for many items, would be available via internet. The impact worldwide, of an effective "retail" parts system, is very important to producers, and consumers. This is, of course, the way Dell runs their own business also. I personally spend more than two thirds of my time in a Home Depot, being annoyed at not being able to find things. And especially with plumbing and electrical. Many times critical parts are not ever carried.

edamo, catalogs are two dimensional, come out seasonally, to update one price a new catalog has to come out, don't take orders immediately you have to call and wait with elevator music, you can't comparison shop, but they can be useful for browsing while on the throne.

The future internet shopper will have 3-D with their outfit on an image of themselves prancing down the runway. Imagination is the limit, and the PC is the go to machine.

Malls will always have their place like radio vs TV.

Conclusion one way or another bodes well for Dell.
