Only a truly clueless person would assume they know my gender or race, since I have revealed neither. If you don't think the advances of modern plumbing and civil rights are examples of things getting alot better then you are suffering from what Dennis Prager (not a tv personality-so perhaps you've never heard of him? He is on radio in southern Cal.) terms "radical egalitarianism". It's when people get so hung up on equality that they hesitate to make value judgements. Why should people get preferential treatment from any public institution solely based on race or gender? Like most Americans, I started at the bottom too, that's why I know how abundant opportunities are in this country. Only I can't complain about my crappy work environment because I am my own boss, have been financially independent since I was 30. I owe it all to investing my own time, effort and money in a country that has an economic structure that allows anyone to capitalize. If you have any underprivileged acquaintances that feel they are not making progress in their lives because Berkeley turned them down, send them my way and I will show them the light.
