Repeat of CHKP

Yesterday, CHKP collapsed for no reasons. Today, the CEO reassured
the markets of their earnings and the stock recovered some.

The MSDW fears seem to be associated with several areas:

1. Amortization of goodwill as a result of SEC-mandated restatements;
2. Slower growth of security market than anticipated;
3. Lower operating margins (but a good portion of this relates to amortization of goodwill as a cost)
4. Lowered second half growth

But there is a lot in the report that smacks me as being fatuous. For example, the claim is made that revamping IPR&D rules will impede mergers and acquisitions because they will be less accretive. Well I got news for Phillips: they were never accretive. It is only through accounting gimmicks that you make them appear accretive. Downgrading a stock on that basis alone is silly, yet outside of the slower growth issue which may be related to a combination of Y2K lockdowns and some longer-term generalized security market conditions he lowered his rating to neutral. But the company, according to the report, is expected to grow at 26% (down from 30%) because it will find it difficult to acquire other companies.

This is just a first pass at what I read. I'll need to think more about the issues.
