Jeff,

I have no info regarding the Cu announcement. Perhaps a call to IR is needed.

My guess would be that the announcement will take place at Semicon Europa next week. AMAT is conducting lots of analyst meetings this week, so that's probably what is feeding the rumor mill.

Chip sales down but showing slow recovery, says SIA

SAN JOSE--Semiconductor revenues worldwide slipped 2% in February to $10.88 billion compared to the previous month, but chip sales were 3.3% higher than they were a year ago, according to new market data released here by the Semiconductor Industry Association.

The new SIA sales report shows Asia on the road to recovery from last year's financial meltdown with a strong 10.3% increase in semiconductor revenues to $2.55 billion in February vs. $2.31 billion in the same month last year. However, like most regions the Asian chip market also suffered a 3.1% decline in February compared to January's $2.63 billion in sales, using the SIA's three-month moving average.

But SIA officials remain confident that the 1999 chip recovery is on track. "This month's numbers show signs of continued industry growth that we expect will remain steady throughout the year," said Doug Andrey, SIA director of information systems and finance.

The SIA Global Sales Report showed an increase in most markets when February 1999 was compared to February 1998. The Americas market was flat, however, at $3.55 billion in February vs. the same month a year ago. Japan's semiconductor market was up 2.8% in February to $2.30 billion compared to $2.24 billion in the same month last year. Japan's sales were also slightly up compared to January's $2.29 billion in sales.

Europe's chip revenues grew 1.9% to $2.48 billion in February vs. $2.43 billion in the same month last year. However, the relatively strong European market also cooled off compared to January, falling 4.0% from $2.58 billion, according to the SIA report, which is based on input from 70 companies as part of the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization.

I still think copper is far away and AMAT has plenty of time to catch up for a plater system- seed layer has already arrived. The only people seriously looking into copper are the microprocessor fabs, and pricing pressures are putting the brakes on them. Is there really a high demand for a 600MHz processor? I think that the technology has momentarily outpaced the demand. DRAMs are just now tooling up for 0.18 micron, and copper is for 0.15 micron and below.
Besides copper, does anyone know what plans Novellus has for low K dielectric, low K antireflective coating, copper barrier, and copper oxide removal?
I apologize to you dollar guys for being too technical, but I like hanging out in this forum.
