Regarding your question "Can someone tell me whether the data is justified?" :

The quick answer is "it depends".

The Dataquest report that was referenced was released late last summer and uses marketshare data from the first half of 1998. A better understanding of todays marketshare and business environment will be reflected in Dataquests 2nd half 1998 report that should be available anytime in the next couple weeks. The report from last summer is only useful in telling you what was happening a year ago. It is best to wait a couple of weeks for the new Dataquest numbers before drawing any current market-leadership conclusions. Other good bi-annual reports come from Probe Research and RHK.

For the best real-time marketshare numbers, read reports from firms such as Cahners in-stat and Dell'Oro, both of which report numbers Quarterly.

So, is it justified? Yes, if you are interested in historical data from a year ago. No, if you want an idea of what happen last quarter or 2 quarters ago.

Best wishes,
