tiger: <modem on the inspiron 7000> I bought my son one also, but he is complaining about the built in modem. Says it is a "cheap" Lucent modem, and that he had to spend 7 hours trying to get advice from both dell and his isp, and finally gave up---bought a us robotics modem card, so now his system works fine. Something about the Inspiron's built in modem is not as finely tuned so bring in a high quality data rate under cerrtain conditions. My son lives in Nevada city california, and he says the phone lines are not as good there, as, say the bay area. But my response is, why the hell would dell try to save a few pennies on the built in modem? My question to you is, does this sound like he received a deficient built in modem? I can supply details; but wanted to get a general reaction. This does not sound like dell to me at all. Should probably write rudedog, but you popped up here first!!! Good to see you.
