I would contend that MSFT has brighter future in enterprise software than SUNW. Consider that MSFT can bring all the elements of enterprise distributed systems to the table... DBMS, TP monitor, Messaging, Queuing, ORB, single sign on security, certificate service, firewalling, host integration, single seat management console, Intranet web, content indexing/search, Ecommerce, etc.

And desktop integration. Wrap that up in a Enterprise Agreement as licensing vehicle that combines desktop os, application and backoffice server access into one desktop price spread over three years. Integrated enterprise services at a much lower TCO than Sun makes for pretty compelling technical and business case.

"but it remains to be seen if they can transition successfully from a desktop company to an internet content provider."

doesn't microsoft control of the the operating systems used by almost all individuals and most businesses give it a tremendous advantage in steering users to microsoft internet sites?
