I think you might be missing a point. I believe that Y2K is just an excuse fore the tier 1 ERP vendors' poor results. The real challenge facing them is that they are running out of customers in the "enterprise" segment of the market that they primarily address.
Their future growth and earnings are indeed threatened as strong mid-market vendors build momentum and volume, since their cost structure (and sales channel structure) is uncompetitive.

Check out Great Plains (US), Navision Software (Dk), who specifically target mid-market customers but are gradually moving upwards, and still enjoy growth rates of 60-90 % per year. These will be the real winners for the next 2-3 years.

That's where you want to put your bets!
