Chuzz, wait up a sec! I said that I had made a back-of-the-envelope five-year growth estimate of 15%. I don't know how Phillips arrived at his 15%.

The Y2K lockdown came as a surprise to analysts covering NETA, but should it really have been all that surprising? Don't network security purchases come from the same IT budgets as hardware, software and Y2K remediation?

Yes, it comes from the same budget, of course. However, every single survey of corporations that has been done indicated that security was right at the top of priority spending despite of and along with Y2K remediation. You'd better believe that it was a shock!

BTW, you are correct in stating that European Y2K efforts are behind those of the U.S. Asia and South America are behind Europe and Africa is even further behind.

Aint that the milltion $ question here. It is not that demand will be strong in the furture and after the past few weeks people are beginning to realise just how important security is as well. But how soon will they free up budgets to buy. Someone else I talked to was saying that his firm is small but they just finished Y2K testing after 6 months and they frooze everything in place. And it will be that way until next year. But he also said that due to the nature of security, some other systems were left open to change, but that is only half the problem since they have to keep testing after each installation. Normally none of the systems would be locked down but loosing like half the sales to them would be a problem for the 2-3 q's this goes on.
