That is what many were waiting for... I was quite disappointed by the lack of large ADSL contract so far. This one is beautiful!

Alcatel to supply ADSL technology to Bell Atlantic

Reuters, Thursday, April 08, 1999 at 15:41

NEW YORK, April 8 (Reuters) - French telecommunications
company Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) on Thursday said it struck a $800
million, five-year deal to supply transmission technology to
Bell Atlantic Corp. to boost the New York-based company's
Internet access services.
Bell Altantic, one of the largest U.S. local telephone
service providers, is making Alcatel its primary vendor for
asymmetric digital subscriber line, a technology known as ADSL.
ADSL digitizes the transmission of data over existing
copper telephone wires at a speed that is 200 times faster than
transmission over an analog modem, the predecessor to digital
technology. ADSL's speeds range up to 8 megabits per second.
Alcatel said it would supply Bell Atlantic with more than
5O percent of its ADSL equipment.
Adding ADSL support enables Bell Atlantic to migrate from
narrowband to faster and more versatile broadband services, and
offer ADSL service to more of its customers, Alcatel said.
