Attended Unterberg Towbin Satellite conference in NYC today. Bernie was in great form and confident about Loral and G*'s future. He would like to use the high yield market for the balance of G's estimated remaining requirements of $600 Million. However, Loral and its partners and the banks are ready to step in if the high yield market is closed. G* Telco service providers are gearing up well for deployment of the system. Loral believes it is best to let its Telco Service partners handle marketing, distribution and servicing. Isn't that what AirTouch, Vodafone, France Telecom and others are best at? Should be 35,000 handsets available by 9/99 and ramping to 40-50,000 units per month by 12/99. Lots of differences between G* and I*!

Fixed Satellite business going well and it appears SPOT's problems are benefiting Loral Skynet. No matter how much fiber is laid around the world, there is nothing like satellite for point to multipoint distribution. FSS business is great.

Tomorrow we hear from the MSS companies - Stiano will be the keynote speaker. G*, I* ICO and others will be present.

Iridium, PanAmSat, launch failures, distressed emerging and high yield markets, China and politics have all weighed heavily on Loral and the whole satellite group. It's been so bleak that the turn in sentiment may be close at hand.

I don't know if this has been posted already but while researching Lockheed Martin as a possible candidate for the DRIP part of my portfolio, I read the following on page 18 of LMT's March 22, 1999 10-K:

"We have approximately a diluted 14% interest (in the form of convertible preferred stock) in Loral Space & Communication, Ltd. We are considering monetizing or divesting this interest in 1999, if market conditions permit and we obtain any necessary Loral Agreement."

I would prefer to see LOR and G* remain independent companies for as long as possible. LMT's statement appears to remove them from list of potential acquirers.
