Merit-based bonuses, yes, but in what form? Cash, or options?

My point is that the owner always has a better idea how much the employee is worth to the company. So, cash compensations are bound to be lower than the fair value (kind of like an used car market). In fact, even the owner in most cases has no idea what the employee's contribution is worth to the company in future. Sharing of ownership is the most fair way to resolve this conflict of interests in my opinion, with the employee sharing the risk and rewards on equal terms. A lemon law for compensation in some ways.
