Paul, Re: The "BIG PICTURE" is that the Merced/IA64 is not just a chunk of silicon but an Integrated System of Software Compilers and EPIC hardware that work TOGETHER to optimize throughput of the system

We have seen reports on the progress of the chip itself but very
little has been mentioned about the compiler. Is there any where
mentioning how Intel is going on this front ?

Gary

Paul,

The IA64 EPIC architecture provides some excellent features for overcoming memory latencies with predication and speculative execution.

IA64 is not the first architecture to try these tricks, and it won't be the first to discover that they are largely a waste of time. DRAM subsystems are already overloaded with non-speculative memory accesses, without adding speculative ones that will later be thrown away.
