Aware Surges as Bell Atlantic Buys Gear With Aware Technology

Bedford, Massachusetts, April 8(Bloomberg) -- Shares of Aware Inc., which develops technology to speed Internet access, surged 37 percent to a record after Bell Atlantic Corp. agreed to buy equipment that uses Aware's technology.

Aware climbed 21 3/8 to 78 3/8 in trading of 2.48 million, almost quadruple the three-month daily average. The stock has almost tripled this year on optimism more phone companies will begin using Aware's technology for high-speed Internet service.

Bell Atlantic, the largest U.S. local phone company, agreed to buy $600 million of equipment from Northern Telecom Ltd. that uses Aware technology. The contract sparked expectations that Bell Atlantic and other large local providers plan to aggressively roll out high-speed data services, meaning more orders for equipment and more payments to Aware. ''This means there are more contracts to come,'' said Charles Pluckhahn, an analyst at Stephens Inc., who rates Aware ''buy.''

Bell Atlantic is buying Northern Telecom's so-called digital loop carriers that funnel network traffic from smaller lines to larger pipes to carry information more efficiently.

Northern Telecom added Aware's technology to the products so they can be connected to high-speed Internet access lines.

Northern Telecom's U.S. shares rose 8 1/8 to 76.

Gator,

I'm not trying to bash EBLD or be sarcastic. I'm just wondering how popular an infomercial site could be. Who would voluntarily go to a web site to watch a 2 to 4 minute commercial about the Popeel Pocket Fisherman?

Do you think EBLD and Ronco have plans to "broadcast" their infomercials via other websites, similar to the way current banner adds are placed on popular web sites?

Thanks for any clarification.

Kevin
