Fiber to the home is expensive. ATT is circumventing the telcos by buying up cable companies who already have fiber installed. Granted, many lines have to be upgraded, but so far cable companies aren't hesitant to move ahead.

RBOCs are less impetuous and while they're all moving to install DSL, there have been many problems including complexity of provisioning, and limitations regarding distance and crosstalk. Nothing new, but now it's a matter of getting the business model down to where telcos can afford to deploy. Businesses will pay; retail consumers won't, or so they say.

My bet's on cable for now.
