The state of Merced:

"even HP isn't writing off the future of high-end 64-bit RISC systems, not the least of which is its own Precision Architecture-RISC-based systems. "There's a lot of life left to RISC," flatly declares Barry Crume, HP's product marketing manager. He then recites the HP RISC road map: "Next year we'll see the PA-8600; the PA-8700 will ship sometime in 2000/2001, and we have announced that we will bring out the PA-8800 and PA-8900 in four to five years." As for Merced, says Crume, "It is not the major industry event that we will look back on and say, 'That was the beginning of the new world.'"
