Derek, You said: ''What I do have misgivings about is their radical politics, their radical agenda, and their radical backers. I dont think it is in our interest to set up a radical marxist muslim fundamentalist government in the Balkans. It is a recipe for more bloodshed, not less. A more moderate figure such as Ibrahim is, IMHO, a more discretionary choice. Extremism in the governments of the Balkans is a situation we should attempt to alleviate, not perpetuate. Im no expert on the KLA, though, but this is the how I have viewed the situation. Id appreciate your thoughts.'' I think a good way to appraise the Balkan crisis is to compare it with the Middle East story: remember that 60 years ago, fresh Jewish immigrants in British Palestine such as Itzakh Rabin were terrorists . They allegedly bombed facilities of both native Arabs and British colons! Yet, it didn't prevent Mr Rabin from becoming Israel's Prime Minister 50 years later... The French could tell you the same with their Resistance heroes: in post-1945 France, as General de Gaulle took office, most high-rank public positions were granted to former resistants . Hence, you can't expect a newly independent Kosovo to be ruled by the ''softliners''. Ibrahim Rugova might be a nice fit for the European Union Relations Minister, though. En passant, Albania's Islamic culture is one with the most low-grade fundamentalism. It's a tolerance showcase when compared to the Taleban's, the Iranian's or even to the Maghreb's (Algeria, for instance). Albanians serve their meals with wine... Their wives don't wear the veil, and we've never heard of Albanian imams preaching Jihad against the West or ordering a fatwah against some intellectual... Anyway, I guess you've watched, like myself, all these Albanian refugees on your local TV news: can you tell from their gear and paraphernalia whether they're Muslim or not? I've seen women in short skirts and pretty few bearded men... That's why it'd be yet another shameful outrage for Europe to dismiss a moderate Muslim country after it has dismissed Turkey. Gustave.
