I agree with your read on DELL. Look at it another way, CPQ has DEC, a margin killer.

by the way, have you seen the Nikon 950 Coolpix yet?

silly comparison i guess but if ford announced
tommorrow that earnings would be 1/2 what everyone
was expecting i can't help but think gm would
be experiencing some significant problems as well.

wasn't aware, mohan that amd was inside so many cpq boxes.
thought cpq used amd for the $999 specials. i picked
up from cpq's comments that those boxes were selling ok
...that in fact that was a big part of the problem--
cheaper price per unit

long term positive for dell no doubt --buying opportunity
is worst case scenario

Couple of points:

1) It's about EXECUTION. CPQ has a good track record
at being in the right place at the right time, but
their execution is terribly lacking. Buying that
dog Digital is a fine example. Buying that dog Tandem
is another. CPQ quit acting a long time ago and have
been reacting for that same time period. DELL is
still calling the tune. The recent IBM, GIGABUYS,
CHINA and EMC announcements are representative.

2) I think the GIGABUYS website is upside for the qtr,
but I hear very little about the revenue being
generated there. Any insight?

I'll bet you that those analysts with buy recommendations
on CPQ have their personal portfolios in DELL.

LONG and STRONG DELL. (And INTC, CSCO, SUNW, AOL, MSFT...)

Mohan, the NYT article pointed to two factors:

1. Poor inventory control. Much worse than IBM or HWP (remember stuffed channels?);
2. Backlash from channel members.
