Actually Russia has much to gain from entering a war. Get rid of all those unemployed soldiers for starters. Gear up their industry. Sell and destroy arms.

The magnetic shock wave devices, which destroy electronic equipment, are not necessarily nuclear. Although nuclear devices also produce a similar magnetic shock wave the effect can be produced by special cruise missile warheads.

At this stage, however, it is more than likely that depleted uranium- tipped smart bombs have been used. These contain U238 which is very heavy and enables the bomb to penetrate armor. On detonation, the U238 particles fly all over the place and contaminate the whole environment. Depleted uranium was the cause (or one of the causes) of the "Gulf War Syndrome" which effected so many US (and of course) Iraqi servicemen. Called depleted because U238 is a by-product from the manufacture of U235 or plutonium. I understand hundreds of thousands of tons of this "waste" material have been dumped in various places around the US and putting it in warheads is the only use which has been found for it.

I'm not sure what the true Russian position is and I don't know whether one can take anything Yeltsin says seriously. I also think it will take time for Russian emotion to transform into action of some sort. IMO NATO is banking on Russia not coming in whether because of Yeltsin's vodka, administrative paralysis or IMF bribes.
