Only the power of Financial Life or Death. Think of the millions of dollars of stock options and perks Mason would lose if 5fer canned him. And EP is the type of guy who exerts power ruthlessly and to his own advantage.

I doubt if Mason blows his nose without checking with the boss first.

That is always different in each situation and
depends on the personalities involved.

The board position (support) and how corporate governance is executed
also play a role in this.

Considering Mason's short tenure at CPQ and Pfeiffer's over
15 years could be an indication.
