This is a very interesting area. [Function of sleep] I haven't studied the area of sleep enough to know what we have found, but I would think that this is a good analogy.

There is some good human research that indicates sleep is used to set medium term memories into long term memory. Of course it may be used for other things as well. In a more speculative vein, in neural nets the way you set things in memory is to replay the different items-to-be-memorized several times - speculatively dreams may be a symptom of the brains memorization process.

PS The best book I have read on an overview of consciousness, which is now considered a somewhat different subject than AI, is by Dan Dennett called Consciousness Explained. If you can get over the gall of the title, it is a very good book.

Very interesting. Thanks for your comments. I agree that a little high level analysis now and then with good feedback from others, can help predict possible future directions and help sharpen the focus on where we should invest next.

Mr. Gilder is a genius in this area, and is a very talented writer as well. That's why I always skim this thread to see what's being discussed.

Communications using IP over WDM seems like a big winner to me. I also think Fibre Channel will be important. It seems like corporate networks were the hotbed for generating economic winners in technology, but now the challenges dealt with in the video networks have embraced/crowned Fibre Channel as the champion for moving and managing big files intelligently and with low latency (and economies of scale in video networks with the advent of Digital TV should grow rapidly). Fibre Channel provides a storage networking structure that gives your "data reserves" more value, more intelligence and more power to allow you to outmaneuver your competitors. High Definition TV requires a lot of bandwidth, whether it shows you pretty pictures of the mountains or whether it shows you a documentary. But the true value of the data being viewed for other than entertainment, is in the ability to say "Hey I wonder" and with the push of a button the network delivers an intelligent answer. The better the system the more intelligent the answer will be. Intelligence also meaning, customizing the answer to give the most meaning to the individual that requested it. I think Fibre Channel, Storage Area Networks, and Compute Area Networks can play a role here to eventually give the most "bang for the buck."

Sincerely,
Joe W.
