"Would you consider DWDM an analog or a digital technology?"

I consider DWDM as digital technology as it tries to encode
more information into a single optical channel by combining multiple
tightly controlled wavelengths of laser light onto a single fiber
path.

"A funny thing happens, though. We keep going back to analog
technology anyway as some of the greatest means of enabling all of
these wonderful things."

You are absolutely right on this one. The way I look at this is
that analog technology enabled the IP technology and the latter
eventually turns around and replaces it - however, this will
take a while though as we have been relying on analogy technology
for such a long time and all the infrastructures are already there...
The most economical solution at this juncture is to adopt
the "analog-digital-analog" solution...

In some sense, some developing countries will reap greater benefits
from the forthcoming internet boom since they can leapfrog directly
into broadband enabled IP technology without carrying the "analog
baggage"...
