Compaq News Hurts Sydney
SYDNEY, Australia -- Concerns about earnings at U.S. companies led investors to unload local shares on Monday.

The All Ordinaries Index fell 21.8 to 3038.2. Declining issues outnumbered advancers, 500 to 332. A total of 405.8 million shares valued at 987.4 million Australian dollars were traded.

"I think investors were factoring in an expected fall on Wall Street tonight following Compaq's profit warning Friday," said Peter Josephson, an equities dealer at Morgans Stockbroking Ltd.

On Friday Compaq Computer warned that its profit for the first quarter will be less than half of what analysts were expecting.

"I think that is really going to reverberate around some of the other big computer names and lead to a fall on the Dow Jones Industrial" Average, Mr. Josephson said.

Blue-chip News Corp. is an indication of what is expected, he said, adding that the company's ordinary shares tumbled 2.3%, or 33 Australian cents, to A$13.80.

Publishing & Broadcasting's losses also played a part in dragging the All Ordinaries down. Its stock dropped 1.9%, or 20 cents, to A$10.30.

Peter Struk, an equities dealer at Reynolds & Co., said investors dumped Australian Internet-related issues amid fears that the Compaq announcement will spark a sell-off of U.S. Internet stocks later in the day.

Sausage Software fell 34 cents to A$1.30, Etrade shed 78 cents to A$6.66 and LibertyOne declined 6 cents to A$1.07.

These low life, scum bag, dirt ball execs should be in put jail for attempted robbery. Execs
should not be allowed to stack the board, manipulate the stock or otherwise screw common
stockholders with unreasonable compensation, retirement and termination packages.<<<
