When I was young and in college, I was the youngest kid in Quantum Physics class. I sat next to the oldest one - twice my age, only just recovering from a twelve-year lacuna as a mathematics grad student.

He took a liking to me, and one of the avuncular nuggets he handed me one lunchtime was drawn from his experience. He married an English major.
"Son, make sure you don't marry someone in your field. There is too much danger of you arguing shop, and it getting personal. No - marry someone from the humanities. That way you can enrich each other."
It seemed like radical advice at the time - I had the usual engineer's prejudice of the humanities as hobbies writ large but otherwise without product. As it turned out I married a nurse, and we could talk about anything&everything without the nagging fear of contradiction.
