I almost put a (= selling at a loss?) after the title in the original post, but decided that the information did not clearly state or imply that. I do think it indicates that IBM is willing to pare their prices to the point where it draws blood in order to optimize their chances at a contract.

I am unable to determine what the object might be: Is it a desperate attempt to try and maintain market share? Is it a strategem designed to pressure DELL at the negotiating table, sort of a "Well, if we can come to an agreement on this, we (IBM) will withdraw from the PC sales arena and you can raise prices to increase margin."? Is it an attempt to sell the high end by discounting the low end? Or is it because IBM really does have economies in place to allow it to sell that cheaply. (I doubt that!) Or is it something else, entirely?

In any case, it would seem to indicate that any 'deal' between DELL and IBM is still only at the components stage.
