From Korea herald> 04-13-99 Samsung develops key components for CDMA mobile phones By Nam In-soo Staff reporter Samsung Electronics Co. said yesterday it has developed key components for CDMA-based mobile phones. In April, the company said it started mass production of MSM (mobile station modem) and BBA (base-band analog processor) chips, which constitute the brains of mobile handsets. Samsung and other domestic handset manufacturers have largely depended on Qualcomm of the United States for the non-memory chips, which can be likened to a computer's central processing unit (CPU). The new MSM chip (model: SCom 3000), which adopts a universal operating system software, allows improved multimedia functions, including Web browsing and e-mail, the company said. It said the BBA chip (model: SBAP2.X/SBAP 3000), which has been imported from Qualcomm and Sony of Japan, will come out in four package types to meet the diverse demands of smaller mobile handsets. "The development of the chips will raise the localization rate of mobile handset components to more than 90 percent," said a Samsung Electronics spokesman. He said the mass production will have an import substitution effect of $2 billion by 2003. However, the advanced CDMA chips will only be used for Samsung mobile phones due to an earlier agreement between Korean handset makers and Qualcomm, which owns the original CDMA technology. Samsung said it will negotiate with Qualcomm over the sales of its chips to other handset manufacturers and royalty issues. In return for right to use Qualcomm's CDMA technology, Korean firms pay 5.25 percent of handset production costs and 6.0 percent of phone exchanges in royalties to the U.S. firm.
