At the same time - there is a troubling trend - as the low-cost CPUs get faster and faster they will be able to handle tasks like web-serving etc." There's still quite a ways to go, especially when you factor in the evolution of text to graphics, and now static graphics to live full-motion video on the Internet. Even banner ads are changing from text/static graphics to video (e.g. InterVU). Re: "Also don't forget the use of server farms made up of multiple cheap PCs." It depends what the server farm is doing... if it's just a bunch of e-gateway machines which transmit static text material, sure, but that's old. The new server farms which are streaming, have mentioned they need the best. Re: "After all if common network cards max out at 10Mbs - how much CPU power do you need to saturate the connection? Not much." Full-motion doesn't quite adequately run on a standalone PC yet, so we need to start there. Re: "SUNW is in command of the high end now I believe - so that's another factor."
