The analysts are generally negative about Internet stock pricing because they either don't get it, or they have totally embarrassed themselves by not seeing the Internet wave coming at them. All this cluck clucking they do about valuations will become more muted with time. If they want to treat CMGI with "traditional valuation" they need to understand that CMGI is a factory -- a brain factory. It has created the human capital with which to crank out widgets in the form of Internet companies. It creates them, it buys them and recreates them, or simply spots the comers before anybody else and finances them. In any case, CMGI's organized brain power exists in place of the old factory equipment of the Industrial Revolution. It is no less valuable because you can't see it. So CMGI is worth whatever is the current net asset value of its holdings with a premium for future value, PLUS and more importantly the productive power of its human capital equipment, which cannot be easily reproduced in another environment. Just ask one of these drooling analysts which they would rather have options on -- GM or CMGI?
