It's likely that our commander in chief would agree with you Daniel (although may be not after the slap in the face he has received on Kosovo), but most in the military would not. It would be reckless not to think that a move on Taiwan is not in the cards : Just in case you haven't noticed, China is already moving on Taiwan, by mobilizing in the strait, by proclaiming that its insertion in a US lead missile defense plan would be viewed as an act of aggression likely to be answered by war, and as of yesterday, by renewing its vows to reclaim this territory by force if necessary. China is in the midst of severe political convulsions, and I have no doubt that its leadership is considering using Taiwan as a Nationalist pretext to take the dirty measures to maintain order. (A la Falklands, or a la Milosevic.), and especially at a time when the US military and prestige is weakened. I of course could be wrong, and would like to be wrong, but dismissing this scenario as "loony" when so many clues are present is, I say it again, completely reckless.
