John: Bill Gates recently gave a long interview on SKY TV in Europe. He said that digital satellite internet connections will be one of the big new applications. The digital satellite link will be very big in Europe. There are millions of homes already relying on satellite - from Rupert Murdoch's SKY, mainly which is expanding and merging with other European stations. As I have pointed out before, the big stumbling block to internet use (and therefore PC use) in Europe is the minute by minute charge for telephone connections. The second biggest stumbling block is the slow speed achieved over existing lines. In their competition with the cable companies, the satellite companies will leap on the ability to offer faster and cheaper internet use through digital satellites. They could easily add it on to the bundle of analogue and digital channels they already offer.

The satellte TV/Radio/Internet dishes are about $150 dollars installed and with a decoder and handset, they are often given away and installed free to encourage subscription, or at a low nominal cost if an existing subscriber changes homes. (Normal practice is to leave the existing satellite on the old house and have a new one installed at the new).

I'm glad to see COMPAQ getting involved.
