I like Brown and Company. Free RT quotes (actually, you get 100 per trade which ends up being free), $5 and $10 commissions, very low margin rates (less than 7%), don't know about the money market rates, usually fast access, and decent phone customer service (variable).

I've been very pleased with them.

I've used 6 or 7 discount brokers over the past 18 months and they all stink. Ameritrade was the worst, until WebStreet surpassed them. The SRO fox in the coop, called NASD, is a farce. They protect their members to the hilt, and the public be damned. The arbitration process is very lengthy, and doomed to disappointment. The arbitrators are loaded in favor of the members who are their prospective future employers. If we were not in a huge bull market, this would be a national scandal, IMO. Do not try Discover Brokerage, my current albatross. This morning, after 15 failed attempts to place orders, 'technical support' could not tell me why their screen said I had been "chosen a deadlock victim." They simply admitted that they were having problems. Jack Bridges

Whatever you do, do NOT try Waterhouse via Jack White....I waited an hour to make a trade on the phone, never got answered, then went over there in person and waited another hour in the lobby. Market was closed when I got to a human and he says "so what?".

they lost money from my account (more than $100k), instituted a margin loan in it's place to make up for it, charged me more than $5k interest, charged me wrong commsisions, and then told me I could go see a NASD arbitrator. SEC is too busy tracking down those little net theives to deal with the Grey suited Conneticut banker types who run Waterhouse. And all the time, they hide back East giving out more rules and making the place unlivable.

Beware...

Morgan,

I have etrade and have been looking for an alternate or another primary. I have read good reports on the following. I do not have an account but I like what I see and will have an account in the future.
Access to the market one hour before and after hours. Voted ahead of etrade , schwab and dlj by Moneyweek.

Good luck,

Whiskey

Personally I like Chuck. Rates are a little higher but if your account is sizable and you trade frequently you get cheaper than the published commissions and some other perks. I think their access is better than the others, especially on busy days.
