I ceased to be a Christian during the Catechism class in which the topic of original sin was introduced.....The thought of a God who would condemn one person for the action of another struck me, as a
child, with a deep horror,.... and I never took the edifice seriously after that.

I had a similar experience, but what it soured me on was specifically the Catholic Church, along with any other denomination that adhered to the doctrine of original sin. But it did not sour me on the Gospels, because there is nothing about original sin in there (oops -- there may be a hint of it in John, but not in the synoptics), let alone in the Old Testament.

At the same time, I could never abide Paul, whom I held responsible for laying the foundation for some of the later Church's most bloody-minded doctrines. The real father of Original Sin, As We Know It, was of course, Augustine (who fathered predestination as well). I cannot think of a single person who contributed as much nastiness to Christian doctrine as Augustine. (He should have stayed a Manichee!)

In any event, I personally pick & choose what I like from the Bible, and heave the rest. The same thing, obviously, goes for Theology...
It's all the easier for me to do that, because I am no longer a Christian...<gg>
