in truth my interest in religion has been solely to the extent that it is an inseparable part of history and culture.

Much of my interest in religion(s) relates to the study of iconography from an art historian's viewpoint. I have always been rather fascinated and amused by the way in which one religion appropriates an icon from another. I am thinking of certain Mithraic or Pythagorean images which, with only slight amendments, make their subsequent appearance in Christian art. Likewise, the image of the shepherd with his flock who makes his appearance in "pagan" Roman art long before he becomes a Christian icon. The mythology which surrounds these images often indicates that appropriation is not solely confined to images... but extends to their associated narratives as well. Tends to defuse notions of religious authority...

(hmmmmm...what am I doing here?...must have made a wrong turn on the way to the Canoeing and Hiking thread... where IS that trail of breadcrumbs.....)
