DaveMG: Very true.

The standards of course are not in stone yet. However the 3 modes of CDMA as decided in brazil is more than likely the way (the IMT-2000 umbrella standard will also include the IS-136/EDGE solution). The three modes even include a mode that was being promoted by Alcatel and Siemens (more for pico sites), the other 2 of course are the ones promoted by Nokia/Ericsson and then Qualcomm.

As for NTT, they have for over 2 years wanted WCDMA (and at 4.096Mcps, they were the ones that originally proposed that rate) and it will be interesting to see there selection of 3G suppliers...I believe an announcement is due out Friday.

The biggest question I have regarding royalties is that Qcom did concede cross licensing even in 3G, so what happens when Lucent & Motorola upgrade IS-95 to cdma2000 in the US? Of course it will be negated with Ericsson sales of WCDMA, but anyway where does the royalty to Ericsson come from (is it a percentage of the royalties received by Qcom?)?
