Suspicious downgrade

Paul Fox based his downgrades on surveys of 45 IT Managers regarding Q4 spending. My question is, why would he downgrade now? He admitted himself that Q1 - Q3 could be fantastic. But in today's high pressure, what have you done for me lately environment, analysts are measured on short term performance.

This is the first time Ive seen someone downgrade a company based on what he speculates will happen a year from now; especially a company that has guaranteed 30% year after year growth.

SO WHY NOW?
Unlike Soundview's ridiculous call on LU a few days ago, it's hard to refute something that wont happen for another 8 months. For Mr. Fox, it's a win-win situation.

IF EMC reports great numbers for Q1-3, he can point to his line predicting "acceleration before the freeze".

IF EMC does great in Q4, no one will hold him accountable for his call 8 months later.

Either way, it's great publicity for him and his firm, as his call will be mentioned throughout the financial media. He wanted to be the squeaky wheel that got the grease.

Does he have an ulterior motive? a evil mens rea?

The only thing shareholders can do is hold him accountable. Not now, but in 8 months.
