HEWLETT-PACKARD JAPAN RELEASES IA-64 BASED UNIX SERVER
TOKYO, Apr 16, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. released Thursday the HP9000 Enterprise Server N Class, the world's first Unix server based on the IA-64 microprocessor standard of Intel Corp.
The server contains a microprocessor developed by Hewlett-Packard Co. but will also be able to use Intel's new 64-bit chip developed for servers once it becomes available.

Hewlett-Packard of the U.S. has jointly developed the IA-64 standard with Intel, but delays in releasing the 64-bit chip prompted HP Japan to release the machine based on its own MPU.

The medium-sized machine is aimed at use by corporate information networks and Internet linkup service providers.

The IA-64 MPU-based data transmission system offers twice the online transaction processing performance as previous models.

Prices start from 15.01 million yen. HP Japan is also supplying the servers on an OEM basis to other computer makers, including NEC Corp. (TSE:6701), Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501), Nihon Unisys Ltd. (TSE:8056), Oki Electric Industry Co. (TSE:6703), Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TSE:6503).
