Internet Advertising to Reach $2.6 Billion in 1999, Report Says

New York, April 15 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. companies will spend $2.6 billion on online advertising this year, a 73 percent increase over last year, according to a report by eMarketer.

Online advertising spending reached $1.5 billion last year, more than triple the 1997 level.

eMarketer, which projects Internet ad sales of $8.9 billion in 2002, said it expects the rate of online advertising growth to slow eventually as the industry becomes more stable. ''Online advertising spending will continue to grow at a robust rate through 2002,'' said eMarketer's Geoffrey Ramsey in a statement.

eMarketer is a New York-based online-business research firm.
