Gary, In the 1960s, professional football was split up into two leagues- the NFL and the AFL. The NFL was clearly superior and Green Bay won the first few Superbowls rather handily. Back then the big game was the NFL championship (normally between Green Bay and Dallas), rather than the Superbowl. Bart Starr vs. Don Meredith and Bob Hayes. In 1969, Joe Namath and the New York Jets won the AFC Championship and were pitted against the almost perfect Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. The Jets were about 30 point underdogs, but Joe Namath promised a win. And he delivered with a 16-7 win. Prior to the game he was accused of being arrogant, overpaid, hanging out with the mob, too flashy, too many women, too many fancy cars, etc, etc. After the game he was a legend, and paved the way for an almost immediate merger of the two leagues. Of course, they didn't have the FTC to deal with. ;^) Scumbria
