I agree ~ a dollar a biscott is queasy. Rude even. It's just a damn biscuit. But no, it isn't, because it has an exotic name and it's in the coffee shop or bakery and costs a dollar a pop and that OBVIOUSLY means YOU COULDN'T POSSIBLY EVER MAKE ONE YOU STOOPID FOOL GIVE ME YOUR DOLLAR AND SIT DOWN.

It took about eight years ~ no kidding ~ for even MJ to figure out we could make biscotti. She does that kind of stuff. Surprises the heck out of me.

"You can do that?"

"Sure. I found a recipe."

When she hands me the cookie I look around like it's a joint or something. Seriously. It's spooky. Not sposed to have that.

Even I, a woman who can't melt chocolate, can make biscotti. But then, I have these random bursts of success in things, because I too, have figured out one of the great secrets of culinary life and that is that foods with foreign names are often easier to make than those with English names.

For instance, that Mountain Cookin' book? Should be easy, right? Good ol' American simple folk cookin? Ahhh---- let me give you an example---

Country Style Groundhog

Kill you a groundhog. Dress 'em and clean 'em.

They don't say in what to dress him; perhaps it depends on how formal your meal will be or what the side dishes are. I also thought they might have this backwards, though I wouldn't hurt their feelings by saying so, but don't you think you'd clean him before you dressed him?

Soak groundhog in salt water overnight.
I see- it doesn't matter how you dress him. The outfit will be ruined by morning, anyway

Be sure to remove the scent glands from under the armpits of the front legs before cooking.
Wouldn't it be easier to just use a little antiperspirant?

All wild game should be aged.
Well, now, that's not very cricket. WHere's the sport in killing elderly, defenseless game? Mountain people are not very PC.

There's a diagram and instructions on How to Build a Still in the back of the book.

Instead of (in addition to?) this G-spot contest, why don't we have a biscotti recipe contest. I am willing to share my Tuscan greatgrandmother's recipe, tested over 100 years, consumed by generals and governors with lip-smacking delight. But only if it wins! Granny would put a hex on you if not.

<< Now, if I could just persuade one of the children to light the oven. >>

Are you living in the stone age? I had a friend who had a propane oven. Note the had.
