I've owned a series of Thinkpads over the years. Like them very much. Recently I bought my wife an I series model 1721 Thinkpad. Very nice machine, it comes with a 14.1" active matrix screen, 300mhz PII processor, 64meg RAM, 5.4GB drive, built in 56k modem and 2x DVD so you can watch movies on it! I have access to IBM employee prices thru relatives so I paid $2159 for the machine. When originally released it sold for $2999 street, have seen it lately for around $2500. Since Intel just cut prices again, you might be able to do even better. The 14.1" screen is 'panoramic', especially if you are moving up from a 10.4". The other nice thing is that it is a 3 spindle machine, so all is built in. Toshiba also makes trackpoint equipped laptops, if you are looking for an even better deal they have an AMD equipped 3 spindle machine with a 14.1" screen for around 1900 bucks!! IBM is announcing an intriguing machine on Monday dubbed the 'transformer'. It will be the Thinkpad 570, a slim 560 like machine that detaches from a base that contains the CDROM/DVD and accessories. I'm guessing it will be more expensive than the I series though.

Regards,
John

Gary, here you go.

necxdirect.necx.com

And, if you can live with a touchpad, put a bid in on this beauty. It will probably end up selling for about $1700-1800.

surplusauction.com

Compare the auction machine to the NECX retail machine.
necxdirect.necx.com

If you have never used an auction site, they are simply awesome. I recommend Egghead.com and Outpost.com. I just got my 19" monitor from and Egghead auction. $413 shipped. A Philips Model 109. Best price anywhere on the Web is $500 plus shipping.

Good luck.

Gary

Gary,

One other suggestion. Check out the Sony full size Vaio notebooks. They have a PII-300, 14.1" XGA, 64 meg, 4.3 GB, 3.5 hours, USB/IEEE-1394, 56K etc. This is a slim unit that weighs about 7 pounds and retails for about $2000 with CD-ROM instead of DVD. Excellent display and ergonomics (though does have a touchpad). Comes with a deal for a second battery. You can find them at Best Buy. You may be able to find a better price on the Web.

Here a link:

ita.sel.sony.com

Nifty machine for the price.

OT-- Gary, here's one I just found. If this goes for anywhere near the current price, you'll be bidding against me <g>.
