OTOT
Wake up ed! You might be able to change your stupid mind if you could picture yourself captured by the Serb forces, who were getting ready to put you in one of the many graves that they are filling with people - dead or alive. Not a pretty picture to contemplate!

The real mission is to end this senseless killing of defenseless people,
humble carl

Dear ed: You ask a good question. In the case of VietNam the Commies were killing many more than 2000 and were aided and abetted by the Hanoi government of N.Viet Nam. South VietNam a signatory to the SEATO Treaty called on the US to come to its aid in defending its sovereignty from the Communists who were infiltrating from the North. We went there under invitation to help an ally who was being invaded. Oddly enough the same people who refused to serve in that conflict and fancied themselves as doves have now turned into hawks and want to invade a sovereign nation engaged in a civil conflict. There is no precedent for what we are doing.

If the excuse then is that people are being killed the number of people being killed in Kosovo is a drop in the bucket compared to the people slaughtered in Ruwanda. And of course we would not dare step into the Russia Chechnya conflict just as we passed on the China Tibet and Mongolia conflicts. If this is to be our rationale then we must also send our men to Sudan,Algeria,Sierra Leone, East Timore, and any other place where people of the same country brutalize each other.

We can be thankful that we are the strongest power on earth or someone using the same logic might have nuked Texas to stop Janet Reno's ATF/FBI gestapo from conducting any more atrocities such as the one perpertrated on the Branch Davidians in Waco.

We call "Slobbo" a liar and a cheat but then we speak of bringing him to the negotiating table. Are we to negotiate with Hitler Jr.? On the other hand look who is leading us - a draft dodging, accused rapist, who loathes the military and thinks nothing of slaughtering innocents in the womb at the rate of 1.4 million deaths per yr.. A larger question to be asking ourselves right now is what would happen if our government turned on one of our states or ethnic subsets? Would we, the citizens, rise up and stop it? How would we do it? The media is so bent one would not know what to believe. And remember to get elected all you need is 44% of 49% or about 22% of the electorate to vote for you. These are scary times being controlled by men without minds and egos unbridled by temperance.

Of course now that we bungled our way into this quagmire we had better make up our minds because war is a binary thing; you either win or you lose. If we go about it half heartedly ala Viet.(Dem. run war) we will get beat. If we go full force ala Desert Storm (Repub. war) we will prevail. In any event I still don't see the rationale for being in the Balkans in light of all the other world atrocities we have passed on. By the way has anyone got a tally on the numbers of Irishman killed in Ireland's ugly civil war based on religious hate? Surely we should send a division or two to straighten them out.

All these guys whose hearts are bleeding for the Kosavars should mount up and head out to the nearest enlistment office and offer to be the first guy hitting the borders of Kosovo.
