UN hasn't been independent for a long time. What country is going to risk losing US foreign aid, goodwill or investment by opposing the US?

<<In this grasp for "new world order" did we actually trash everything we've accomplished this century ... the U.N. doctrines, the cold war ...?>>

Its funny how some people out there consider the empowerment of the UN as the "New World Order." Im not falling for either camp. Has the world undergone a reallignment? Yep. Was it due? Sure was. The power balance in the world has been unstable since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some may be quite surprised to hear me of all people say this, but I think its good that power is balancing against the US and its European allies. Makes the world less rosy, but it also forces the US to put the velvet glove back on and concentrate on matters of vital national interest instead of entertaining foreign interventionist adventures. Administrations like this one have no place directing US foreign policy, which has been hamfisted at best.

James,

I think that team Clinton/Albright have just about
managed to ruin everything that the Reagan and Bush
years managed to accomplish such as an end to the
Cold War, strengthening the UN as a place to settle
disputes, and creating an era of economic, not military
competition throughout the world.

When George Bush decided that he had to stop Saddam
Hussain's grab for the Persian Gulf oil, he went to
both the United Nations and the American people. He
explained why Iraq had to be stopped. He got approval
from the UN to remove Iraq from Kuwait, and he convinced
the American People (except for the liberal loons) that
this war was a necessary evil but that we had to triumph.
Now we have Clinton fumbling around the Balkans, afraid
to ask permission from the UN (knowing they would vote
against him), mumbling explanations to the American
People, and bombing Yugoslavia without any clear goal
or explanation of what we hoped to accomplish. This
whole situation is a disaster...

In this grasp for "new world order" did we actually trash everything we've accomplished this century ... the U.N. doctrines, the cold war ...?

We are thinking for a new millennia James. The old rulz do not apply anymore. If you hadn't noticed, the Cold War is over. I believe CNN has published a series. It is now officially, history. The UN is an unwieldy dinosaur ruled by vacillating “yes men”. A “beyond all else, cover thine own butt first” circumspect bureaucracy. An inefficient den of good ole boy, career diplomats; unable to form an original thought or attempt an singular action related to any thread of common sense.

The UN doctrines you are so fond of are being massaged into an efficient pedagogical dogma befitting a race (human) verging on a great leap in the progressive development of humankind.

Indeed James, “A New World Order” , constructed from a nucleus of right verses wrong. Before you ask “who's right and who's wrong” James, basic human right and wrong, passed down through the ages. Adopted by tried and true methods of communal survival. Identic in every religion, race or creed on earth. We are learning from the past, not stuck in the mire, pushing the cart of a past so desperate to repeat.
