Thanks for your reply John. What irks me is my friend has an IBM i series and he regularly gets speeds at 50k or a little better. The slim line 600 series is a much more expensive machine and I naturally hoped its performance would be equal to that of the i series in the modem department.

I guess it's not enough of a defect to make me return the notebook.

Now, how do I know if I'm getting that?<g> I don't want to change services . . . or socks.
