I don't think it's as crazy as it might sound. They are working on bypassing the RBOC's and this is a first step. Further were they to
buy Loral and spin off the SS/L they would have an impressive network
with satellite and local wireless to bury AT&T/TCI and all the RBOC's.

PMF; My guess is that the last mile or local connect will be wireless. There have been some recent developments in pulse code multiplexing that have greatly multiplied bandwidth of wireless. Expect WCOM to do a deal with Nextel and have the RBOC's beat without need for their infrastructure.
