while the young women you mention may sigh for rich men, the question is, will they still get wet for them, time after time after time, for decades? No. It is also true that women who marry for very different reasons do not get wet for them time after time, for decades. In this case they are less concerned with getting wet than with what they consider the real, lasting, pleasures of life: nice houses, platoons of servants, awe and deference from those around them, and lots and lots of things. Rich men here almost inevitably have mistresses anyway; it is expected. In the old days the wives took refuge in the church and in their possessions; these days things have changed. Manila is chock-full of opulent ballroom dance places, where the socialite matrons cavort with paid "instructors", most of whom do their real dancing after the clubs close. I have no objection at all, in fact nobody else seems to either. The only vocal objections to the developments have come from the church and occasionally from children of the women involved, both of whom object to the money being spent on those other than them. The husbands are pretty silent about it, and don't seem to mind; not long ago a rich man shot and killed a "dance instructor" for messing with his mistress, but I've never heard of it happening over a wife. Many of them seldom see each other. In a place where most people who aren't rich have a very, very, hard time, and opportunities for anything but very well educated women are almost nonexistent, this is all more understandable. PS (edit) For some reason I'm rather glad I missed the preceding discussion.
