The one thing that has nagged me all this time is jbe's observation about conquering armies and more generally soldiers anong enemy civilians.
Rape seems to be something of SOP in those cases.
This does suggest that a goodly percentage of decent patriotic young men can become rapists under the right circumstances.

Try to imagine how uneasy I am with that. And yet I cannot deny it, no, not and remain honest.
