Is your posting wholly consensual? Are you actually coerced? When someone asks you a question, or challenges your assertions, are you not free to withdraw and avoid the waste of time? Please don't withdraw from the colloquy. The sum is greater than the parts. Each person's withdrawal diminishes me.

Joan, I substitute behaviors doe emotion I cannot deal with complex emotions objectively because emotions are not directly measurable -- behaviors are.

There is a common approach in science -- focus on simpler systems first. Use a model system. Then, when you understand the simpler system, look at more complex systems.

Breakthroughs in molecular genetics began with an understanding of bacteriophages, progressed through bacteria and only then into fungi. It makes understanding so much simpler. This approach also depends on the notion that there is an evolutionary commonality among all organisms. Details differ, but the relationships hold. Examining the mating behavior in fruit flies and sticklebacks illuminates the behaviors we humans categorize as "love".

I don't mean to convey the impression that I am coldly analytical when it comes to matters of the heart -- indeed, I think I am quite the opposite. I only mean to say that it is best to segregate our individual passions from analysis.

Poetry takes the opposite approach. It subjectively explores complex emotions and applies those "truths" with total abandon. There is nothing wrong with that, provided we understand that we are dealing with esthetics.

TTFN,
CTC
