STBs, WIN-TV, And Early WAVX Deployment...

To reiterate what Steven said: WIN-TV is NOT for the NON-technical or newbie crowd. So, we aren't limiting our future. It just happens to the earliest (announced) implementation.

As for STBs, I'm not troubled by eventually being part of these devices AT ALL. Speaking in gross generalities, STBs appeal to the fat part of the market that IS NOT particularly Web savvy. But to be sure this is the fattest part of the market. It is not an accident that AOL, which itself is contemplating everything from AOL TV to AOL hand-held devices (in their own quest for ubiquity--which I hope overlaps with ours), is going to be giving away simplified/stripped down PCs in exchange for a commitment to a AOL premium service. First off, thanks to WAVX patents and supply chain, we don't have to focus on the device: whether its a PC or an STB or an information appliance like, for example, NCR's "Microwave" ATM or Nokia's Web phone. (Incidentally, HWP has been a proponent of information appliances for years now.) Second, the easier and more familiar the device, the fatter the part of the market you can grab. AOL--and other savvy marketers--want newbies. Newbies represent the last frontier for Web service marketing and e-commerce.

Will newbies be the most resistant to setting up a Wave-enabled account and making purchases? They MAY be more resistant... at first. But, my suspicion is, that my Uncle Harry and Aunt Vivian
(who have an STB stationed on top of their Magnavox) will get a kick out of making that first Web purchase... because they've heard all the e-commerce news and hype and wondered what might be in it for them. For them, SECURITY of potential Web purchases is a big deal. (And as of having my own credit card information hacked into recently, it's turned up on my radar screen as well.) My Aunt has commented that she wonders if it's at all "safe to buy things over the Web." WAVX technology takes that concern off the table.

Best Regards,
