FOCUS-Lucent, U S West in $300 mln equip pact

DENVER,, April 19 (Reuters) - Telecommunications giant Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU - news) on Monday said it will sell $300 million in equipment to U S West Inc. (USW - news), under a pact that
supplies the Baby Bell telephone company with the tools to modernize its networks.

Under the two-year agreement, Lucent will sell switching telecommunications equipment, software and professional services to
Denver-based U S West. U S West will deploy 41 new 5ESS Digital Switches, replacing analog central office switches and software in
its network.

The switching technology will allow U S West to accommodate greater volumes of voice calls and data transmission as well as facilitate
the installation of additional customers lines more quickly.

''We are working with U S West to get them the kind of equipment they need to go forward as they evolve their network, and to deliver
world class products and services to U S West customers,'' a Lucent spokeswoman said.

All 14 states in U S West's territory are expected to benefit from the contract through additional 5ESS software upgrades and potential
expansions. The amount of investment in each state will be determined based upon customer need and the business environment.

The companies also unveiled a strategic relationship designed to speed communications technology innovations to U S West customers, Lucent said.

U S West and Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent will focus on technology evolution initiatives, collaborate in the early test and evaluation
of key voice and data products, shorten development times and focus on cost effectiveness.

The two companies have worked together on other initiatives focused on products like modems and high-capacity networks.

Lucent to build One.Tel GSM stage one

SYDNEY, April 19 (Reuters) - Telecommunications group One.Tel Ltd said on Monday it has selected Lucent Technologies Inc to build the first stage of its national GSM mobile phone network.

It said the contract was worth A$240 million over five years. Lucent is the world's biggest telecommunications equipment maker.

One.Tel, Australia's fourth largest telecommunications carrier, said the GSM network would have enough capacity at the end of five years
for two million subscribers.

''One.Tel's GSM network will position the company as a major player in the Australian digital mobile market,'' associate director of
technology Stephen Moore said in a statement.

It said it is negotiating agreements on inter-carrier roaming, which would allow its customers to roam to another network when outside
One.Tel's coverage area, with other carriers.
