nuke44, The Germans IMO bear the brunt of the blame for what's going on in the Balkans for the last ten years- not that the Serbs are "nice guys." "Nice guys" would never have survived for the last 600 years in the Balkans. They (the Germans) saw the Russians retreating and decided to try to build a sphere of influence in eastern Europe.

It was German meddling that directly led to Slovenia's and Croatia's secession from Yugoslavia beginning its disintegration. It was no accident that Germany recognized Croatia and Slovenia immediately after their secession as sovereign countries- Germany prodded them into the action with promises of aid and trade....

NATO did the right thing by doing an end run on the U.N. when they initiated their strikes against the Serbs.

Was Bush wrong to seek, and receive, UN approval for the Gulf War?

Obviously, the only reason for the "end run" is that NATO knew that Russia and China would not give their approval for the war against Yugoslavia.

Nuke,

I thought Somalia was the height of UN screw-up, where they put some
third world f--ker in charge of the operation! Well then there was
the Bosnian, where Dutch Troops high on "grass" with their tanks ran over unarmed Bosnain Moslems to save their own lives. In the
first place they were supposed to protect the Gordze. The same happened in Srebrinca, and many other towns in central Bosnia. For your information, I was visiting Bosnia with a relief agency
at the time and what I saw committed by Serbs was so horrific that remind me of a much bigger conflict that I saw many years ago! This why we need a force with clear mandate and authority to carry it out!
